The hutong’s communicative nature is rooted in the habits, customs, and rituals of Chinese life. The Podium as Activated Hutong is situated in the intentionality of everyday life, and therefore closely linked with the meaning of some potential or actual action. Its identity is formed by a process where the invisible aspects of culture are embodied in the visible fabric of the site.

The Podium As-Is

The podium is a several story (usually 7 story maximum) mixed use fortress that contains parking, shopping, offices, service, infrastructure and lobbies. They tend to occupy an entire city block and are partly above / partly below ground. It has become the predominant real estate and land use formula for organizing a piece of land destined for tall buildings in China. Unfortunately, the podium often acts as an arcade conceptually and tends to organize program off of a central lobby that lacks diversity and programmatic integration.

The Podium TO BE

In reformalizing the podium, we will primarliy be addressing issues of government and infrastructure. Because these issues are fundamental in the scope of societal organization, the podium will also act as a model for future podiums. In other words, there will be a strong prototypical nature to our project. Diagrams and drawings will address this aspect of the project. However, careful consideration will be made to not reduce the project to a prototype but moreso provide continuity in the development of the city. Finally, our project will also address different types of programmatic growth in order to explore various formal possibilities and outcomes.
